LUMERICAL INTRODUCES FDTD SOLUTIONS 6.0, INDUSTRY'S MOST CAPABLE BROADBAND FDTD SIMULATOR

Dispersion Engineering Made Possible Via Highly-Accurate Material Modeling

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - August 15, 2008 - Lumerical Solutions, Inc. (www.lumerical.com), a leading provider of design software for micro- and nano-scale optical components, is pleased to announce the release of FDTD Solutions 6.0. FDTD Solutions 6.0 hosts highly-accurate material modeling capabilities that enable optical designers to more accurately predict device performance across wide wavelength ranges.

The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique has become the industry standard for designing micro- and nano-scale optical components, owing to its ability to quantify device performance across a wide frequency range in a single simulation. However, such broadband performance data is only useful if the models employed to describe the behaviour of the materials used in the design are themselves accurate. It is exactly this issue that FDTD Solutions 6.0 addresses, through its innovative multi-coefficient materials (MCMs) and autofitting capabilities that enable users to quickly generate MCMs as required for any frequency range of interest.

"In our interactions with many customers, we found that simple Lorentz, Drude, and Debye models were insufficient to accurately account for the dispersive nature of real materials across significant wavelength ranges" says James Pond, Lumerical's CTO. "A more comprehensive approach, like that employed in our multi-coefficient materials, was required to account for highly-dispersive materials employed in CMOS image sensors, solar cells, plasmonic biosensors, optical display components and other applications of industrial interest."

"Together with FDTD Solutions' robust parallel engine, their comprehensive approach to material modeling will better equip me to analyze light extraction from organic light emitting diode substrates," according to Horst Greiner of Philips Research. "The ability to instantly generate very accurate materials models from my tabulated refractive index data within FDTD Solutions promises to streamline my design process."

"Before FDTD Solutions 6.0, Lumerical has been able to deliver impressive simulation technology that has been instrumental in developing our silicon photonics platform" said Pennsylvania-based Lightwire's Mark Webster. "Based on Lumerical's demonstrated achievements in delivering robust parallel processing capabilities and their very fast simulation technology, I am excited to see the innovations they have made in terms of material modeling in FDTD Solutions 6.0."

Lumerical is now shipping Release 6.0 of FDTD Solutions and this version is available for trial download at www.lumerical.com.
