Academic Research Licenses

Premium Academic License

The Premium Academic License is Lumerical's standard Academic License offering. The Premium licenses are ideal for research groups or individual users looking for direct email and phone support from our world class support team.

KX License

The KX License is the perfect option for budget minded individual users. The KX License users benefit from the full functionality of Lumerical products installed on an individual workstation or laptop. So what is different from our Premium Academic License? Your support is exclusively provided through the Knowledge Exchange, our user-driven forum which is moderated by Lumerical's Product Experts.

CUE Overview

Educating the Scientific Leaders of Tomorrow with Best-in-Class Technology Today

Lumerical's CUE program supports photonics education by providing educators and students with access to photonic design and analysis software tools. Through this program, the engineers and scientists of tomorrow can advance their understanding of photonics, electromagnetics and semiconductors in applications ranging from integrated optical communications to solar energy and biophotonics.

CUE program participants gain access to:

  • The most up-to-date Lumerical software tools, the same fully featured versions available to our research and commercial customers
  • Lumerical’s extensive online Knowledge Base
  • Technical support from the user community and Lumerical's applications team via the Knowledge Exchange community forum

Program Details

CUE program licenses are granted to accredited, degree-granting institutions for undergraduate and graduate level coursework.  Project and research activities outside of the standard institutional calendar and syllabus are typically not supported through CUE. For further details, review the short CUE introductory video under the Program Introduction tab.

Along with providing software and technical support, we work with educators at leading institutions to develop complimentary teaching materials to aid in curriculum planning and instruction. Segmented into modules, the materials illustrate key learning concepts through exercises that utilize Lumerical tools. You can find the curriculum for each course under the "Curriculum" tab above.

Lumerical Solutions teams up with notable educators to provide instructors with complimentary teaching materials as well as the latest simulation and design software for their course. The teaching materials cover learning objectives and exercises, and include example files for Lumerical tools to enhance understanding and hands-on learning.

Curriculum Samples:

The complimentary course material covers a wide range of integrated optical components and circuit designs. Each module contains exercises that illustrate key learning concepts using Lumerical’s simulation tools. Additional exercises are also included for students wishing to further explore the device behavior.

Lumerical teams up with leading Universities to provide the latest simulation and design software for higher education students to take part in hands-on exercises making use of commercial grade simulation software products, or explore the capabilities of such simulation tools in course-based research projects. Through CUE, Lumerical grants University students access to Lumerical's professional design software for class-based research projects and instructional or laboratory courses.

We use Lumerical MODE Solutions in the Optoelectronics and Photonics class in which undergraduate students learn the basic properties of light and various devices that produce, process, or detect light. The class used to be mostly based on theoretical treatment. With introduction of Lumerical MODE Solutions in the class, students have the opportunity to see more clearly how those devices work and design their own device structures. We found Lumerical MODE Solutions a great learning tool and thank the Lumerical CUE program for the opportunity.

We used Lumerical FDTD Solutions as a simulation tool in the course “Numerical Computation of Electromagnetics”, at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, Korea. Students conducted interesting projects including Fresnel lens design and plasmonic trapping of spherical particles. It gave them better understanding of numerical theories covered in the course and by pursuing individual projects, I believe it gave them an overall picture how the theories can be applied in real problems.
