Hands-on Tutorial – Lowering the Barrier to Entry for Electronic/Photonic ICs

Description: Validated, unified Electronic/Photonic Design Automation (EPDA) tool flows are a key technology component to bring standardization and scalability to silicon photonics. In this tutorial, we introduce the first open commercial silicon photonic process and PDK-based design flow. Experts from the leading design tools will demonstrate how close integration between schematic capture, electronic-photonic co-simulation, and layout tools, together with electronic/photonic PDKs delivers silicon-proven designs, such as LiDAR. Attendees will learn about EPDA co-design and co-simulation, as well as photonic-specific compact model libraries (CMLs). Attendees will get hands on experience with the latest EPDA design tools and foundry PDK.
Takeaway: Attendees will gain an understanding of the first open commercial silicon photonic process and PDK-based design flow. They will also have the unique opportunity for hands on experience with the latest EPDA design tools, and the methodology to develop a LiDAR design.
Panel – Photonics Coming of Age: The Emergence of PDKs

Description: As photonics transition from research in universities and labs to commercial production, a critical enabler is the emergence of Process Design Kits (PDKs) to provide access to foundry technology through the use of photonics-focused tools such as simulation, schematic capture, layout and design rules checkers. The first commercial photonic PDKs emerged in 2018. Pioneers who delivered these PDKs will discuss challenges in their development, their application in photonic design, and project how they will develop in the future. They will also discuss how photonic tools are linked to the emerging commercial foundries.
Takeaway: The emergence of Process Development Kits (PDKs) is a critical enabler in the transition of photonics from research to commercial production. PDKs provide access to foundry technology through the use of photonic- focused tools such as simulation, schematic capture and layout. The first commercial PDKs emerged in 2018.
